The NSS unit is an extremely active cell of the college. It has over 400 registered volunteers and an dedicated team of programme officers.
The NSS activities are coordinated through NSS Advisory Committee of the College which for the current academic year (2014-15) includes the following members:

The unit has performed exceedingly well since its formation and continues its endeavours in the service of society. The activity report of the college NSS unit summarise these achievements.


23rd July 2015: NSS Unit and Centre for Equal Opportunity were inaugurated at the hands of RJ Uday Chari, 92.7 Big FM.
  • 18 Jan 2014:  N.S.S Volunteers participated in a talk at Mahlaxmi temple, Panjim on teachings of Swami Vivekananda, P.O. Shahsikant Morajkar accompanied the students.
  • 20 Jan: Ms. Maria Lourdes Rodrigues an historian, delivered a talk on 'Festivals of Goa'.
  • 25 Jan:  N.S.S. volunteers participated in a rally to celebrate Voters Right's rights day. In this regard  250 volunteers participated. It started of at the Azad Maiden, stopped at  Don Bosco School and  from there on proceeded to the Panjim church square. It was carried out primarily to create awareness among the general public and especially among the youth to exercise their right to vote and to vote ethically. The event was in collaboration with D.H.E and  SVEEP  (The Systematic Voters Education and Enrollment Programme , an initiative of the Election Commission ).  The rally was co-ordinated by Dr. Smitha Bhandare Kamat, NSS Unit  co-ordinator, assisted by P.E. Micheal Dias and P.O. Siddesh Silimkhan.
  • 30 Jan:  The N.S.S.Unit of S.S.Dempo College of Commerce and Economics, Altinho-Pajim, organized a Blood Donation Camp in the campus.Dr. Sanjay Korgaokar and his team from G.M.C. conducted the same.   Students, faculty and  members of the support staff donated.  The event was co-ordinated by Dr. Smitha Bhandare Kamat, assisted by Ms. Valerie Fernandes, Mr. Sashikant Morjakar, and Ms. Aditi Barve.

NSS unit in colloboration with Counselling and CEO undertook following activities:

  • 6   Feb : Dr. Ashish Shrivastav gave a talk on-‘Coping with examination stress’.
  • 12 Feb : Professor Kishor Jugal had an interactive session with the students on -'Adolescents health and stress management. The event was partnered with Rotary Club, Panjim.
  • 14 Feb: One billion rising for justice- love mends gender inequality- a thought day was celebrated where studen ts participated in art/poetry and writing out their thoughts.
  • 11 Feb : Volunteers participated in a talk- “Suraksha-Prevention of Sexual Exploitation in Goa”, at Mapusa organized by Goa Balcao.
  • Projects Undertaken: ‘Some wounds don’t heal’ an FB page created by volunteers to create awareness about gender and child violence.Child Labour survey conducted at Chimbel.

Folder and pen stands, paper bags and cloth bags, sale of candles made by Aguada Prisoners were the projects undertaken.

Red ribbon club activities were carried out to create AIDS  & a drug free life awareness  among the students. In this regard banners & posters were put up  & talks were conducted for the students.

Following are the N.S.S activities held for the month of September 2014:

  • 12th September: 5 N.S.S. volunteers enlisted for the Pre R.D. Camp selection trials at the Youth Hostel, Campal.
  • 13th September: Around 20 N.S.S. volunteers attended the talk on the awareness and control of cancer, organized by the Goa Cancer Society held at 4:30 p.m. in  Menezes Braganza Hall- Panjim
  • 17th September: Ms. Natalie Furtado and Ms. Sonia Shitkar participated and won the 1st & 3rd place respectively in an essay writing competition on "Role of Volunteers in Disasters Management" organized by GVM college - Ponda.
  • 26th September: N.S.S. volunteers attended a talk on "Empowerment & Challenges for Women in Tourism in Goa" organized by the Women's Wing of Goa Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber's Surendra Babu Timblo Hall.
  • 27th September: N.S.S. volunteers participated in the Heritage walk organized by the Department of Tourism - Goa, to commemorate the World Tourism Day, from the Viceroys Arch to the Bom Jesus Basilica, Old Goa.
Swatch Bharat - Nital Goem Mission Activities

  • In line with the "Swatch Bharat Mission" under the leadership of Shri Narendra Modi, PrimeMinister of India, the Government of Goa proposed the "Swatch Bharat, Nital Goem Mission" for the state of Goa. It was decided by the Government through the Directorate of Higher Education,  that all NSS and NCC volunteers along with other students and teachers of colleges would have to clean their college campus and surroundings on 2nd October, 2014 between 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
  • In lieu of the above notice, the S.S. Dempo College of Commerce & Economics conducted cleaning of the campus on the 2nd of October 2014.
  • N.S.S., N.C.C. and student volunteers were already present by 8:30 a.m.
  • Though it was a public holiday, Gandhi Jayanti, there was an overwhelming response from both the students and teachers alike. There was an attendance of around 280 volunteers.
  • The event began with a demonstration of waste segregation & management given by the M.A. Tourism and Heritage Management students of the college, under the headship of Asst. Professor Mr. Kedar Tadkod.
  • Following the demo the students began cleaning the campus. There was great enthusiasm as gloves, masks, brooms, shovels and garbage bags were being handed out. The areas in front of the Directorate of Lotteries and Vigilance, the garbage dump towards the left of the college and the Provedoria were tackled. The entire staff room, the N.S.S & N.C.C. rooms and the college classrooms were also cleaned.
  • Strewn papers and garbage were collected, bushes and trees trimmed, corners swept, cobwebs removed and furniture dusted. There was a transformation in the way the college looked.
  • Impressed, many clicked pictures of the premises and students clicked pictures of themselves cleaning.
  • The NSS unit of S.S. Dempo college of Commerce & Economics organized the N.S.S. Annual camp 2014 at Shristhal, Canacona-Goa from the 30th Oct to the 5th Nov. The guest of honour was Mr. Sudesh Naik, principal of the govt. high school Sristhal Canacona and the chief guest was Mr. Kamlakar Manshi.
  • Activities conducted for the course of eight dayz were cleanliness drive, Temple Cleaning, pottery classes, awareness about snakes and other endangered animals, poster competition, run for unity rally in remembrance of Shri Vallabai Patel, distribution of cloth bags  paper bags  & workshop on delivering FIRST AID etc.

To commemorate the world AIDS day the NSS UNIT organised a series of activities across the week.

  • The 1st day was marked with the distribution of red ribbons, creationg awareness about AIDS, to all students & teachers alike.
  • A baked goods sale was organised throughout the week to raise funds to support the project “AKANSHA” of the Help India Charitable Trust, whereby they provide nutrition for the marginalized HIV+  families from Chimbel & Bambolim. The aim is to enable such families maintain their CD4 count & build their immune system.
  • The N.S.S volunteers raised a good amount of  Rs. 11,705/- from the sale.
  • A talk sensitizing the N.S.S. volunteers on AIDS and its common Myths was organized on the 4th of December in the college hall at 11:30 a.m.
  • The speaker for the talk was Ms. Eva Rodrigues and Ms. Sunita Shetty.  Ms. Rodrigues has a 25 year career with the United Nations. She has worked with the World Health Organization (WHO) and joint UN Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). Ms. Shetty is the Treasurer for the Help India Charitable Trust.
  • The AIDS week concluded with a poster competition held on Saturday 6th The topic for the competition was “Giving hope to the HIV+ and AIDS victims”. The competition showcased creativity at its best revealing excellent ideas for reaching out to those infected. Ms. bagged the 1st place, followed by Ms. & Ms.  as 1st & 2nd runners up respectively.
